Michael takes a look at the press beta for Larian’s Divinity: Dragon Commander. Specifically, we’re looking at the RPG elements, how they affect the world, your comrades, and battle.
This is the only preview of any substance I’ve seen so far.. Great job. Some actual staples of the gameplay and mechanics and some extended flavour of the dialogue – and I feel much more able to respond to whether I’m personally going to like it or not. Great to see you enjoyed the combat too – I was worried it was too fast and button mashy.
Thanks, really appreciate the detailed feedback. I agree, the combat itself is difficult to understand from let’s plays alone, because in some ways it looks more APM and spammy than some major RTS’, but actually, the dragon is reserved for when you’ve sent orders, and it’s really there as some extra flare whilst units carry out said orders. It works astonishingly well, and for people who aren’t really into the APM eSports style of doing things, it gives another level of competition that’s more visceral as well as intelligent rather than straight up ‘forum says x doing y is the best way to do it’.
Sounds like there’s a nice effect of the dragon being a flying cinematic camera to see the orders enacted & take part. Could be really immersive – whereas usually I feel (in order to play an RTS well) you are never able to see the spectacle play out because of the “must click.. must build more!”.
