Borderlands studio Gearbox Software has hired former Homeworld employees to create a new Homeworld title.

According to Gearbox representatives, CEO Randy Pitchford is collaborating with Blackbird Interactive, a studio founded in 2007 by original Homeworld creators Relic Entertainment.

The new game will called Homeworld: Shipbreakers. Incidentally, Blackbird had been developing a title under the name Hardware: Shipbreakers since 2010 which was initially going to be a free-to-play RTS and would have been the successor to the original Homeworld.

The Homeworld franchise was bought out by Gearbox during the THQ bankruptcy auctions earlier this year for $1.35m. In July, Gearbox announced a HD re-release of Homeworld 1 and 2.
