Players have been reportedly losing their characters, items and in-game cash in GTA Online due to an unexplained issue.

Grand Theft Auto Online has been plagued with several problems since its launch last week. Players were not able to log-in due to server issues and some of those who made it in couldn’t go past the first tutorial mission. Today, Rockstar is addressing another problem related to players losing their characters, progress, items and/or in-game cash.

According to a post at their support site, this has been happening since the first few days after launch. So far, they haven’t pinpointed exactly what is causing it.

Rockstar have suggested players to play online on disc-based content instead of using the cloud but characters created in this session might not be saved.

There are apparently several different, unconventional ways of attempting to save your progress online.

“When exiting GTA Online, please pause the game and choose to return to Single Player,” Rockstar wrote. “This will trigger a save and ensure that progress since the last auto-save is recorded. If you purchase items and immediately power the console off or exit through console system menus, those items may not be saved.’

Additionally, Rockstar warns not to use the “Retry” button after receiving the message “Rockstar Cloud Servers are unavailable” because this will most likely result in a character loss. “If you are trying to access GTA Online and Rockstar Cloud Servers are unavailable, please exit to GTAV Story Mode and try entering GTA Online again through Pause menu in Story mode.”

“We are continuing to investigate the causes of the lost progress and what can be done to minimize the impact until a permanent fix is in place,” said Rockstar.
