Unlike the PS3, Vita, Wii U and later the PS4, indie developers will not be able to self-publish their games on the Xbox One. In order to launch games on the next-gen console, indie devs must strike a publishing deal with either Microsoft Game Studios or a third-party partner.
“[Microsoft will] continue to court developers in the ways that we have,” sayd GM of Redmond Game Studios and Platforms Matt Booty. He added that the company will “explore new business models and new ways of surfacing content. But Microsoft Studios is a publisher that works with a wide range of partners, as do a lot of other people, to bring digital content to the box.”
As of now, the only games exempt from the policy are the ones on Xbox Live Indie Games on the 360.
