Reddit user portemantho has created an interesting iPhone app, that scans real objects and allows you to import them into Minecraft. Using the video function of an iPhone, anyone can scan an object and make it blockier. Like this creepy owl for example.

The app takes a real life object…

scans it using the iPhone’s video function…

Then cubifies it, to place into your Minecraft world!

This is not a totally new concept; there has been software for Kinect for two years now that can do much the same thing. However, it is the first time we’ve seen something like this available for a popular, portable consumer piece of technology like the iPhone. With creative ideas like this, it’ll be interesting to see how augmented reality will be further put to use in the future.

Here’s the full album uploaded by the creator. We haven’t received details yet on pricing or availability.
