Nintendo South Korea in the center of controversy after sexist tweet
Nintendo South Korea has found itself in steeped in controversy after its Twitter account made sexist remarks towards Eun Ji Park, a celebrity and former weather caster.
According to the report, the tweet read: “She should have just stayed as a TV Meteorologist. Getting all the work done on her face like that. How can a brainless bitch like you gets the entire spotlight? Who is your sponsor? TV…sigh…”
The word “sponsor” is an English loan word which is equivalent to “sugar daddy” in Korean. It implies that Park gained her celebrity status through sexual favours.
The incident has since been all over South Korean news on sites like Daum and Naver. Some have been speculating that whoever handles the Nintendo South Korea twitter account accidentally mixed up his or her personal account. However, according to an official statement from the company, the tweet was not posted by an employee. “We’ve determined no employee has posted such comment on our Twitter account,” Nintendo told Naver. “We’d like to know how this ended up on our Twitter. This matter is frustrating.”
The tweet has since been deleted.
