EA has disabled “non-critical gameplay features” like leaderboard achievements and other functions in an attempt lift stress off overloaded SimCity servers.

For those who haven’t been keeping up to date, the SimCity launch did not go exactly as planned. Due to the internet always-on feature to fight piracy, the game has been having server issues. Players are unable to connect to the servers, their cities or contact their friends.

“We are continuing to do everything we can to address the server issues. In the meantime, so that we can give you as good an experience as possible, we are in the process of deploying a hotfix to all servers,” wrote Community Manager LadyCoconut on the EA forums. “This includes various improvements and also disables a few non-critical gameplay features (leaderboards, achievements and region filters). Disabling these features will in no way affect your core gameplay experience.”

EA hasn’t specified how long these features will be disabled for but the move to disable these features seems like a very drastic and desperate move to fix SimCity. Earlier today, they also revealed that they will be adding more servers over the next two days.
