Minecraft is an extremely successful indie sandbox game developed by the young developer studio „Moiang“. Sandbox games are games in which the player has unlimited freedom over the environment and nearly everything in it. The player starts somewhere in the nowhere in a generated world that can be defined before creating.

Build:

The randomly generated singleplayer worlds are made, like nearly everything else out of 1m x 1m blocks which can be normal stuff like wood, stone and sand or rarer stuff like coal, gold and diamonds. They can be picked up after chopping, cutting or blowing them up. The player can store them in his inventory (27 slots, 9 hot-bar slots) and stack up blocks up to 64 units per slot. Wood for example, is the most important recourse. Depending on what Biome (climatically & geographical conditions) your located in, it’s also the most often appearing resource. The second most important recourse is stone, which becomes cobblestone after picking it up. With these two basic blocks the player can build his first house, garden, rampart and much more. The only architectural limit is the creativity of the player. After getting used to the gameplay and building stuff, players can mine the underground to find rarer blocks and crafting ingredients.

Craft:

In Minecraft, nearly every block or item can be crafted to something more useful. The player can craft simple items in his inventory everywhere but most of the crafting recipes only work on a crafting table which can be crafted from regular stone. Since the release, players can also smelt and enchant items on the associated table. Since there are no crafting tutorials or crafting recipes ingame, it’s recommended to visit the official Minecraft wiki or to download a free smartphone app containing them too. Besides building materials it’s also possible to craft weapons, armor, roller coasters and much more which adds RPG-like aspects.

Fight:

In the Daytime the Minecrat world is peaceful (expect Creepers) and calm. But when the sun’s gone and the moon comes out together with the darkness; monsters, zombies, spiders, creepers and other dangerous creatures appear. Most of them spawn randomly in dark areas, but at night they can spawn everywhere, so keep your house illuminated. On above mentioned the crafting table, weapons and armor can be produced from stone, iron, leather, diamonds, gems, fire or even gold. Defeated enemies drop items and experience which can be used to conjure items.

Create & Mod:

Since Minecraft gives the player full control over the environment, modifications and architectural ideas are limitless. The game also combines all block textures in one .png image file which can be easily opened in e.g. Photoshop and be modified. From that tons of fan-made texture packs were created and are available for download. This game also features the greatest and artistic community the indie industry has ever seen, delivering ideas, texture packs, custom maps and many many more great goods. For the biggest part of the community Minecraft is a relaxing and reassuring game. But overall it’s a matter of taste.
